I compared these two brands the only honest way available without a test lab: spec sheet against spec sheet. Every number below comes from Generac's published Guardian spec sheets and the Cummins QuietConnect spec sheet NAS-6254, plus dealer street prices, all pulled August 2, 2026. I have not run these machines side by side, and I won't pretend otherwise.
One disclosure before the numbers: the newest Cummins spec sheet I could find carries a 2021 copyright (NAS-6254-EN, 7/21 revision). The lineup itself is current — dealers list all three models for sale today — but Cummins' figures are older paper than Generac's. I flag it because nobody else does.
Short version: on natural gas between 13 and 18 kW, Cummins wins the paper fight. Its RS13A and RS17A produce their full rating on NG with no derate, while most Generac sizes give up output. Above 20 kW of propane rating, Cummins air-cooled has nothing to sell you, and Generac wins by default. Service-network availability leans Generac almost everywhere.

Notes on the fine print. I didn't pull an NG rating for the Generac 10 kW, so it gets a dash instead of a guess. All three Cummins models share one platform: the same QSJ999G 999cc V-twin engine, a single 100 A output breaker, and extreme-cold AE variants for northern installs. The RS20A also sells as the RS20AC at $6,662 with a 200 A service-entrance-rated transfer switch included — worth knowing, because transfer switches are usually a separate line item.
The no-derate math, done explicitly
Air-cooled generators are rated on propane. On natural gas — which is what most standby buyers actually pipe in — output drops on most models. Cummins' two smaller units don't drop at all, and that produces a genuinely useful pricing anomaly around 17 kW.
Say your load calculation lands near 17 kW on natural gas. Here are your options:

Read that middle row carefully. Generac's "18 kW" delivers exactly 17.0 kW on natural gas — the same usable output as the Cummins RS17A, at the same money on a good day and $900 more on a bad one. The common installer move of "just step up to the 22" buys you 2.5 more NG kilowatts for roughly $800-1,700 over the RS17A. Sometimes those kilowatts are worth it. But size against the NG column, not the sticker, and the RS17A is the value pick in this band.
The same logic applies at the bottom of the range: the RS13A gives you a true 13 kW on NG for $4,286, undercutting Generac's 14 kW MSRP while giving up 1 kW.

Two observations. At the 17-18 kW class on natural gas, the machines are near-identical eaters: 258 ft³/hr full-load for the RS17A against 247 for the Generac 18 kW. Not a deciding factor. On propane, the class difference matters more than the brand: a 22 kW Generac at full load burns 3.9 gal/hr, so a 500-gallon tank at 80% usable fill is roughly four days of continuous hard running. If you're on propane, oversizing costs you tank runway, not just purchase price.
Above 20 kW, this stops being a comparison
Cummins' air-cooled line tops out at the RS20A — 20 kW on propane, 18 kW on natural gas. There is no air-cooled Cummins answer to Generac's 22, 24, or 26 kW.
That matters for one buyer profile in particular: the all-electric home. Electric heat, electric water heater, one or two heat pumps, maybe an EV charger — those loads routinely compute past 20 kW, and at that point the realistic air-cooled shortlist is Generac's 24 or 26 kW or Kohler's 26 kW. Every Cummins QuietConnect model is rated 65 dB(A) at 23 feet. Generac Guardians span 61-67 dB(A) at 23 feet under load depending on model, with the 22-26 kW units at 67. Generac's weekly self-test runs a low-RPM "Quiet-Test" mode at 55-57 dB.
So Cummins is 2 dB quieter than the big Generacs and a few dB louder than the smallest ones. I'd treat all of it as a wash. These are manufacturer lab numbers at a single microphone distance; a unit against a reflective wall next to a bedroom window will annoy you at either rating, and 2 dB is near the threshold of what people can even perceive. Warranty and the dealer-network reality
Both brands advertise five years, and both deserve a closer read.
Generac's Guardian warranty is a 5-year limited. Cummins covers QuietConnect for 5 years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first — and per published dealer terms, labor and travel are covered only for the first 2 years, with parts covered the full 5. A failed part in year four costs Cummins owners the service call, not the component. That 2,000-hour cap sounds low but isn't for standby duty: it's about 80 continuous days of running.
The bigger practical gap is the network. Generac's installer and service network is the largest in residential standby — full stop. That is not a reliability claim; I have no fleet failure data for either brand and won't invent any. It's a logistics claim: more Generac dealers means more competing install quotes, easier parts availability, and faster service scheduling in most ZIP codes. Before you commit to the RS17A math above, confirm an actual Cummins servicing dealer operates near you. Natural gas home, load computes to 13-18 kW, Cummins dealer in range: shortlist the RS13A or RS17A. Full rating on NG, competitive street price, and the RS20AC bundles a 200 A transfer switch if you need one.
Load above 20 kW, or all-electric home: Generac 24 or 26 kW by default — Cummins air-cooled isn't in the race, and your real comparison is Generac vs. Kohler.
Thin dealer coverage for Cummins in your area: take the Generac. The paper advantage at 17 kW is real but small, and it doesn't survive a service desert.
