Tesla's Powerwall 3 and Generac's Guardian line solve the same problem with opposite machines. One stores electricity and runs in silence. One makes electricity and runs as long as gas flows. This is a spec-and-price comparison built from the current manufacturer datasheets and 2026 installer cost data — I haven't run either through a test house, and I'll say so wherever a number is secondhand.

The short version: similar money buys either one. A single Powerwall 3 installs for $13,000-16,500; an 18-24 kW Generac installs for $9,000-16,000. What that money buys is completely different, and the deciding variable is how long your outages last — not the logo.

One row deserves a flag: the expansion-pack detail. Tesla's own site blocked my verification pull, so the "up to 3 packs per unit" figure comes from installer listings, not Tesla directly. The 11.5 kW, 185 LRA, and 13.5 kWh figures are straight off Tesla's published datasheet.

Half the internet is still comparing the wrong Powerwall

Most Powerwall-vs-Generac pages still cite Powerwall 2 numbers: 5 kW continuous, soft starters required, "can't start central AC." The Powerwall 3 more than doubled continuous output to 11.5 kW and publishes a 185 LRA motor-start rating — which changed the air-conditioner story that older comparisons were built on. If a page tells you a Powerwall can't start your AC without add-on hardware, check its date.

That cuts both ways. Generac's spec sheets carry a number the battery crowd skips: the natural-gas derate. The "24 kW" Guardian produces 21.0 kW on natural gas — 12.5% less than the sticker. The 26 kW produces 22.5 kW on NG. If you're sizing against real loads on utility gas, use the NG column.

Power vs. energy: the arithmetic that decides this

These machines fail in different ways, and the failure mode is arithmetic, not opinion.

The Powerwall 3's 11.5 kW covers most homes' continuous draw comfortably. Its constraint is the 13.5 kWh tank. A house averaging 1.5 kW — fridge, lights, furnace fan, electronics, some HVAC cycling — drains one unit in about 9 hours. Run the numbers yourself: 13.5 kWh ÷ 1.5 kW = 9 hours. Push the average to 3 kW and you're at 4.5 hours. Two units buys 18 hours at that easy 1.5 kW pace; a maxed four-unit stack (54 kWh) buys about 36 hours.

The Generac has no tank to drain. On utility natural gas it runs until the utility stops supplying — through the outage, however long. The fuel meter tells you what that costs: the 26 kW draws 188 ft³/hr at half load and 333 ft³/hr flat out. On propane, the 22-24 kW class burns about 3.9 gal/hr at full load, so a 500-gallon tank at 80% usable fill is roughly four days of continuous heavy running. That's the Generac's real constraint: not duration, but fuel logistics and an engine droning at 60-67 dB(A) outside your window.

Installed cost in 2026 — and the tax-credit change that moved it

Here's the freshest fact in this comparison, and the one stale pages miss: the 30% federal residential clean-energy credit (25D) expired December 31, 2025. Every 2025-era article quoting a "net" Powerwall price after the credit is now wrong by thousands of dollars. Battery quotes in 2026 are gross. Tesla ran a $500-per-unit rebate for orders placed November 2025 through March 2026 (as reported by SolarReviews), but that window has closed. Generators were never 25D-eligible, so the expiry moved only one side of this ledger — against the battery.

Ownership costs diverge after install too. The Generac wants an annual service contract at $250-600 — it's an engine, with oil, filters, and a valvetrain — and carries a 5-year limited warranty. The Powerwall has no scheduled engine maintenance. Over ten years, that maintenance line adds $2,500-6,000 to the Generac column. Multi-day outages with electric heat: where the battery loses, honestly

I'll do this math plainly because battery marketing won't. If your home heats with 10 kW of electric resistance strip heat running through a winter storm, you're consuming on the order of 240 kWh per day. That is roughly eighteen Powerwalls' worth of energy — per day. No residential battery stack survives that, and solar recharge under storm cloud cover doesn't rescue it. For multi-day winter outages in an electrically heated home, a fueled generator isn't the better option; it's the only one that pencils.

Flip the profile and the verdict flips. If your outages run 2-6 hours a few times a year, the Generac is an idling engine you bought for a marathon that never happens — while paying $250-600 a year to keep it race-ready.

Where the Powerwall wins

Within its energy budget, the Powerwall 3 is simply a better experience. Switchover is automatic with no engine spin-up, operation is silent at 2 a.m., there's no fuel line to trench, no carbon monoxide, no weekly self-test rattling the patio, and the electronics live indoors or on a wall instead of on a concrete pad.

Pair it with solar and short-cycle outages stop being a countdown at all: the array recharges the pack by day, the pack carries the night. I won't oversell this — recharge depends on your array size, the season, and what you're running, and a cloudy week with heavy loads still wins. But for the outage profile most grid-connected homes actually experience — hours, not days — a solar-plus-Powerwall setup handles it without you noticing.

Which one fits your outages

Buy the Generac if your outages run multi-day, you heat with electricity, or you have natural gas at the meter and want set-and-forget endurance. Buy neither on 2025 numbers. The federal credit is gone, Powerwall 2 specs are obsolete, and Generac's NG derate belongs in your sizing. Get 2026 quotes against your actual loads.
